ABOUT THE DESIGNER / SCULPTOR

The Peace Silver Dollar was designed by Italian / American sculptor Anthony de Francisci. Born July 13th, 1887, in Palermo, Italy, he moved to the United States in 1905 and shortly after gained his U.S. citizenship in 1913. At an early age, he took great interest to the designs on coins and studied under very well know coin designers including Herman Atkins MacNeil and James Earle Fraser.

The design of the Peace Silver Dollar came to when the Commission of Fine Arts in 1921 called on eight sculptors to enter into a competition for the design of the new Silver Dollar. De Francisci entered the competition and won, and gained great recognition for his design.

Although De Francisci never worked directly for the U.S. Mint, he designed several U.S. minted coins & medals including Maine Centennial commemorative Half Dollar, the National Guard Bureau Insignia and the American Eagle pin, to name a few. During his years in the United States, he resided in New York City until his death in 1964.

ABOUT THE COIN

The Peace Silver Dollar was minted in December, 1921. The obverse side of the coin features Lady Liberty facing to the left, wearing a ornamental headband that contains spikes pointing out of it similar to that of the Statue of Liberty. Sculptor Anthony de Francisci used his wife Mary Teresa Cafarelli as the subject for the face of Lady Liberty’s head. Above Lady Liberty’s head reads LIBERTY. To the left and right sides of Liberity’s head are the words IN GOD WE TRUST. The date of the year of each individual coins mintage is displayed below.

The reverse side of the coin has an eagle standing tall on a rock, with the words THE UNITES STATES OF AMERICA & EPLURIBUS UNUM (which is Latin for “Out of many, one”) inscribed above. Below the eagle at the bottom of the coin is the word PEACE. Ray’s of light arise from the the lower right of the coin.

The Peace Silver Dollars were minted from 1921 – 1928, and again in 1934 and 1935. Originally the coin was designed to represent the end of World War I, however popularity of the coin kept mintage & circulation going.
